A Print-on-Demand Storefront for a Specific Theme

Tried a POD service with a hosted storefront. Made one sale (to myself, testing). Closed it after three months.

What I Built

A small store selling designs in a specific thematic category. Used a print-on-demand service so there’s no inventory risk.

The Approach

Designed about 15 products. Spent maybe a weekend on the store setup and another weekend on designs. Total cash outlay was near zero.

What Happened

One sale in three months, which was me testing the checkout flow. Shut it down.

What I Learned

  • POD is genuinely easy to set up; that’s also why there are approximately nine million POD stores
  • Design quality matters less than distribution; I had no distribution plan
  • Organic discovery on these platforms is nearly impossible without paid ads or a following
  • The economics work at volume, not at 15 products with no traffic
